Knock Knee Bow Legs

Precision correction for Genu Valgum and Genu Varum. Specialized "Guided Growth" treatments for children and adolescents.

Restoring Perfect Alignment

Many children have slightly curved legs as they grow. However, when Bow Legs (Genu Varum) or Knock Knees (Genu Valgum) persist beyond certain ages or are severe, they can lead to joint pain, unstable gait, and early arthritis. At Trinay Orthopedic Hospital, we specialize in minimally invasive limb straightening. We help children grow up with straight, healthy legs.

Our pediatric orthopedists are here to guide you. Read more about our team on our About Us page, or Contact Us to book an appointment.

Understanding the Conditions

Bow Legs (Genu Varum)

Common in toddlers, but if it persists after age 3, it may indicate Blount’s disease or rickets. We look for outward curving of the legs even when ankles are together.

Knock Knees (Genu Valgum)

Often seen between ages 3-6. If the gap between ankles is more than 8cm when knees are touching, or if it's painful/asymmetrical, intervention is needed.

Advanced Correction: Guided Growth

For growing children, we rarely need to "break" and reset bones. We use Guided Growth (Hemi-epiphysiodesis) using tiny Eight-Plates or Tension Band Plates. By temporarily slowing growth on one side of the growth plate, the child's own natural growth straightens the leg over time.

  • Day-care Procedure: Usually under an hour.
  • Fast Recovery: Children walk the same day and return to school within 48 hours.
  • Scar-less Results: Tiny incisions that fade rapidly.

Our specialized pediatric team monitors these changes through precise digital X-ray measurements until perfect alignment is achieved.

Alignment FAQs

What is the best age for guided growth correction?

The "sweet spot" is usually between ages 8 and 13, because the child must still have active growth plates. Earlier intervention is possible for severe conditions like Blount’s disease.

Are the plates permanent?

No. Once the legs are perfectly straight (monitored by X-rays every 3-6 months), we perform another small procedure to remove the plates so the growth can continue normally.
